Nina Constantinova Dobreva was born on January 9, 1989.
Sofia, Bulgaria. At the age of two her family moved to Toronto, Ontario, Canada. At a young age Nina showed a talent for the arts and she took dance and gymnastics. She continued in gymnastics and represented Canada in aesthetic group gymnastics in international competitions.
As a teenager Nina started modeling which lead to commercials. Through these experiences Nina discovered acting and how much she enjoyed it. She started doing auditions for television and films.
"I started in the business quite late compared to all my other friends. I was sixteen or seventeen and at first I went to performing arts high school in Toronto. I was always dancing and doing gymnastics and performing in different ways but it wasn’t acting until I got an agent and started auditioning for movies and TV shows."
She landed roles in various TV movies that were produced in her home country such as Away From Her and Fugitive Pieces. She was able to use her dancing abilities for her part in the MTV film The American Mall. Eventually she got the part of Mia Jones on the series, Degrassi: The Next Generation.
"It was challenging because it’s not me. I went to a lot of web sites that dealt with teenage pregnancy. I read a lot of stories about girls having to go through what Mia did. There’s the alienation factor and there are all the stories and rumors, having everybody judge you. It isn’t easy."
During this time Nina had attended Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts in Toronto until her graduating year. She entered secondary studies at Ryerson University in Toronto, majoring in Sociology, but in 2008 she decided to quit school in order to pursue her acting career full-time.
In 2009 Nina auditioned for her first television pilot for the CW series, "The Vampire Diaries" where she landed the role of Elena Gilbert. "I was really, really, really lucky to get this part and I remind myself every day. I just love going to work every day. I basically get paid to have fun and play and just have a great time. And it’s a challenge, too, on top of everything; that’s the best part – getting to really be challenged as an actress."
Nina currently spends her time living in Los Angeles, California, and in Atlanta, Georgia, where "The Vampire Diaries" is filmed. Nina loves to travel and has often visited Europe. She enjoys playing volleyball, soccer, swimming, rock climbing, wake boarding, snowboarding, and horse back riding.

Nina Dobrev (born Nina Konstantinova Dobreva; in Bulgarian, Нина Константинова Добрева; January 9, 1989) is a Bulgarian-Canadian actress. She played the role of Mia Jones, the single teenage mother on Degrassi: The Next Generation, from the show's sixth to ninth season. She currently stars as Elena Gilbert and Katherine Pierce on The CW television teen drama The Vampire Diaries.
Early life
Dobrev was born in Sofia, Bulgaria and moved to Canada at the age of two, where she was raised in Toronto, Ontario. She speaks fluent French, English, and Bulgarian. Her mother is an artist, and her father is a computer scientist. She has one older brother. She attended J. B. Tyrrell Sr. Public School and Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts in Scarborough, Ontario. From a very young age, she showed great enthusiasm and talent for the arts—dance, gymnastics, theater, music, visual arts, and acting. Dobrev attended the Dean Armstrong Acting school where she was discovered by many different talent agencies in Toronto.
Career
Modeling jobs led to commercials, which then turned into film auditions. Shortly thereafter, she booked roles in feature films, including Fugitive Pieces, Away from Her, Never Cry Werewolf, and the television series Degrassi: The Next Generation. She also was in an MTV movie called The American Mall on CTV. She is currently starring in The CW's drama The Vampire Diaries, playing the dual role of Katherine Pierce, a vampire that the same brothers each loved while they were still human during the American Civil War, and Katherine's doppelganger Elena Gilbert, a human who is caught between the same two vampire brothers.
She also had a minor role in the erotic thriller Chloe, theatrically released by Sony Pictures Classics on March 26, 2010. The film grossed $3 million in the United States theatrically and became one of the higher-grossing specialty films in the United States in 2010 (according to Variety, "$3 million is the new $10 million" for specialty films' box office in 2010).
In August 2010, Dobrev appeared in the opening sketch of the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards.
